Background
A way to split hives taught by Bob Binnie. Allows better control of timing for queen introduction, better acceptance, and better growth.
Steps
- Split brood chamber into two boxes
- Put queen in bottom box by shaking or finding
- Place queen excluder on bottom box and place new split on top
- Place super on top box
- Return 24 hours later (Or longer)
- Remove excluder and place super on top
- Place double screen board on top of super
- Place new split on top of screen board
- Feed
- Add queen to top box
Other Tricks
When Swarm Cells Are Visible
- Split frames with cells across boxes, 2 per box
- Separate with double screen board
- Check in 3 weeks.
- Combine if only one queen survived
- Split if both did
