Background

A way to split hives taught by Bob Binnie. Allows better control of timing for queen introduction, better acceptance, and better growth.

Steps

  1. Split brood chamber into two boxes
  2. Put queen in bottom box by shaking or finding
  3. Place queen excluder on bottom box and place new split on top
  4. Place super on top box
  5. Return 24 hours later (Or longer)
  6. Remove excluder and place super on top
  7. Place double screen board on top of super
  8. Place new split on top of screen board
  9. Feed
  10. Add queen to top box

Other Tricks

When Swarm Cells Are Visible

  1. Split frames with cells across boxes, 2 per box
  2. Separate with double screen board
  3. Check in 3 weeks.
    1. Combine if only one queen survived
    2. Split if both did
