I’ve used horizon planning for years now, but I only recently discovered that folks like McKinsey do something similar. Horizon planning focuses on strategic goals along distant points called horizons. It is really useful because it rapidly communicates the direction, long-term goals, and flexible yet practical approach to getting there.

Self-managed or self-managing teams have been appearing in more literature and leadership training. Still, the term seems somewhat vague and eerily similar to concepts like holacracy and self-organizing teams, which probably makes you want to roll your eyes. Still, self-managed teams are highly valuable and worth creating and maintaining.

For all the years I’ve been helping teams grow, I’ve rarely met one who felt that they were exceptional. It’s one of those quirky things where, in one conversation, the leadership will proclaim how great their teams are, and the next, pull me aside and beg for help. There are always issues, so I thought I’d write about some things I’ve noticed that turn good teams into great ones.
